This is your first choice for accommodation close to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (the largest hospital in the world!).
John, Amy and Jemma Ledger welcome you to our house in Mondeor.
If you are using Window Internet Explorer, try pressing F11 for a better view of this site.
We are ideally situated for guests working at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, locally known as 'Bara'. The house is on the corner of Columbine Avenue and Ormonde Drive, just ten minutes away from the hospital by car.
Access to the city is also easy on the nearby M1 North motorway, and offers a 20-30 minute drive (outside peak traffic periods) to the University of the Witwatersrand ('Wits') Medical School and the adjacent Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in Parktown. This motorway also affords quick access to the attractive social centres of Melville and Rosebank, with their restaurants and night life.
If you are doing your elective at the Charlotte Maxeke hospital, or Helen Joseph hospital or other hospitals in the centre of Johannesburg, we do NOT recommend our place for your stay. The morning and evening traffic congestion can be a real problem. Rather find accommodation in Parktown, Parkview, Auckland Park or in a university residence. In short, Bara-House is great for Bara only!
Maps of South Africa and Johannesburg can be viewed on Google Maps. To locate our house go to www.maps.google.co.za and type 211 Columbine Avenue, Mondeor, Johannesburg in the Search box.
On this reduced map Columbine Avenue is the red road running from upper left to lower right. Baragwanath Hospital is just below the red road close to the left hand margin. 211 Columbine Avenue is right where the name 'Mondeor' appears near the lower right hand side of the map.
Guests must book for a minimum of 14 nights.

There is no telephone in the house, and our guests normally hire a mobile phone or bring one with them - they are inexpensive and essential for keeping in touch. We regard a mobile phone as an essential item of equipment for your visit to South Africa. However, we recommend that you do not do any mobile phone deals at the airport as you are likely to pay much more than anywhere else.
In terms of new legislation, mobile telephones have to be registered under the RICA regulations. This requires you to provide proof of residence when you apply for a SIM card. Amy will provide you with a standard letter for this purpose after your arrival.
We do not have a landline in the house but Mondeor is covered by wireless 3G or HDSPA and a suitable wireless modem will enable you to access the Internet from your laptop. This is for you to arrange with a service provider of your choice when you get to Joburg.
Jemma can provide Internet facilities for you by arrangement at a charge of R100 per week. Please discuss this with her on your arrival. Note that Internet charges in South Africa are considerably higher than in other countries.
We have an information leaflet that will be given to you on arrival. Please read it carefully.
No smoking is allowed inside the house. Please respect the rights of other guests, share the facilities and equipment equitably, clean up after using the kitchen and bathrooms, and strive for a sensitive and harmonious relationship with others sharing the house. Our guests work extremely hard during their times on duty at Bara and appreciate a quiet home from home in which to sleep, relax and study. Kindly report any problems to us immediately for attention. See our contact details below.
There are two cats in the house who generally mind their own business. Please take note if you are allergic to cats!
SHOPS AND AMENITIES
There are good shopping, banking and entertainment centres nearby at Southgate and The Glen, with smaller convenience stores, restaurants, internet cafe, post office, medical centre and pharmacy in Mondeor itself or close by. There are also gyms and health centers in the area. Joggers will find the rather hilly terrain a worthy challenge, and many of the main roads have good pedestrian walkways that are jogger-friendly. The nearby Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve offers walks and trails with the opportunity of encountering various antelope species on foot, and plenty for birdwatchers to see. Guided tours of the reserve are offered on most weekends.
PERSONAL SAFETY AND SECURITY
Some of our guests are apprehensive about visiting Johannesburg and may have heard negative reports about crime levels in this city. Our house is very safe with security bars on all external windows. The property is completely closed to the street by a remote-controlled automatic roller door. Mondeor is generally a peaceful and tolerant area with its own local police station - none of our guests has ever been threatened or lost any belongings while staying at our house.
Observing basic safety precautions, being sensible about your situation at all times and avoiding high risk areas will ensure that your stay in Joburg is no different to visiting London, Washington, Frankfurt or Paris. Basic safety precautions include not carrying valuable items like laptop computers, expensive cameras, jewellery, large amounts of cash or other tempting items in busy public places. There are also parts of downtown Johannesburg city where one should not venture alone.
We have a strongroom available where you can store valuable items on request.
YOU ARE PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFEKEEPING OF YOUR VALUABLES AND WE ACCEPT NO LIABILITY FOR ANY LOSSES INCURRED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
SAFETY WHILE DRIVING
ALWAYS put valuable items in the boot of the car. Take special precautions to ensure that your passport, driving licence, credit cards and cash are kept in a safe place. Loss of such items can be a real hassle and waste a lot of your valuable time.
Whenever possible and feasible, and on request, we will meet our guests at Johannesburg International Airport, and take them back for their return flights at the end of their stay. Providing flight details in good time is important if you want to make use of this facility.
Note that this service cannot always be guaranteed as we may be unavailable for whatever reason.
Our charge for airport transfers is R300 one way, and we can transport two people and their luggage at a time. Taxis are available at the airport; they charge R400 and upwards for the trip to Mondeor. There is no direct bus or train service from the airport to Mondeor.
Joburg has a limited public transport system. Municipal buses do travel the main routes during working hours, but are infrequent after hours or over weekends. Minibus taxis can get you to most destinations - however they are considered risky beause some of the drivers are reckless. Some of our more adventurous guests have successfully used these taxis to get around.
Most of our guests find it beneficial to hire a car to get the best out of their time in Johannesburg. Without a car your options are very limited. To drive here you must bring a valid International Driving License which can only be issued in your home country, and cannot be obtained after your arrival in South Africa.
There are many international car hire companies like Avis and Herz in South Africa, but their rates are rather high. A number of our guests have successfully used the services of Kinetic Car Hire, who offer more reasonable rates for older model cars. Please contact them directly to arrange car hire and to find out their terms and conditions.
